Markellos Tower in Aigina

This gorgeous pink concoction was built in 1802 by Spiros Markellos, a member of Parliament who also fought during the Greek War of Independence from the Turks - the Greek Revolution, as it is commonly known.

Given its architectural style some believe that it was built even earlier, in the 17th century, as part of a defence system.

During 1826-27 the Tower served as the government headquarters and during 1828-29, when Aigina town was the capital of Greece, it housed the offices of various Cabinet ministers. It later served as the National Treasury.
